MotoGP DutchTT Assen 2009: Rossi clinches 100th victory in Assen

Valentino Rossi clinched his 100th Moto GP victory after cruising to a comfortable victory at the Dutch TT in Assen.

Rossi won with consummate ease, losing his lead very briefly at the start of the race but storming back to complete his historic achievement.

Rossi unveiled a huge gallery of photos chartering his career in celebration of having reached the landmark, with a packed crowd at Assen chanting his name.

"It's fantastic because this track is special and there is a lot of history. My father won this race in the 250cc (category)," the 30-year-old Rossi said.

"It's great when you can ride your 100th victory," he added after unrolling a 10-metre wide poster showing his 99 previous grand prix wins.

Rossi now leads the standings after seven of the season's 17 races with 131 points, with Lorenzo at number two on 126 and Stoner third with 122.

The three men were tied at the top with 106 before the Dutch race.

Jorge Lorenzo was a comfortable second, while Casey Stoner finished third, despite being a long distance from the front two.

Colin Edwards finished in fourth, just ahead of Australian Chris Vermeulen.

James Toseland battled superbly to clinch sixth spot after an extended tussle with a host of drivers in a very clustered second group of riders.
